Title: a place for aurora
Artist name: Maki Kaoru
Date: 2008
About: I am obsessed with leaves.
I am always fascinated by its ethereal, phenomenal and transparent quality that amplifies perceptual experience. In this series of work, I photograph close-ups of leaves by focusing only on a tiny point (in this case, the tip of the leaf) while letting everything else being blurred. What I see is this paradoxical effect of "seeing" and "unseeing" by perceiving multiple layers of lights and colors. I wonder what has been traced, erased, altered, remained, found or lost in the process of transformation between seeing and unseeing.

Biography: Maki Kaoru is a photographer and visual artist based in New York. Her work explores empathetic and perceptual responses to nature, the act of seeing. Working with temporal elements of nature, such as light, shadow, water, wind or leaves, her work transcends those natural phenomena and transforms them into ethereal visual form. Maki initially studied photography at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. She earned her M.F.A. in Photography from Ohio University in 2005 and received numerous grants and fellowships including residencies in Croatia, Italy, and Lancaster. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums in Los Angeles, Maryland, Portland, Ohio and West Virginia.
